This a beginners guide to grappling and its many techniques. The audience I am shooting for ranges from the beginner to the intermediate.   I decided to focus on the easier maneuvers to try and help out those who are interested in learning the basics of grappling.  Whether you are young or old, trying to get fit or just looking for a new hobby grappling is an extremely rewarding science.  I say science because it is exactly that.  There are so many intricacies to sport it is impossible to describe them all so I figured I would pick out some basics and give it a go.  If you are interested in starting out I would recommend checking out your local gym and if there is no local gym try using YouTube   There is a wealth of information out there its just a matter of tracking it down.  If you are lucky enough to have a gym withing driving distance most places will give you your first class free to get a feel for it.  I am going to tell you from the beginning that its a hard workout and not for everyone but if you are willing to take on the challenge you will not be disappointed.

Gear that you will need:
think safety first.  Some important pieces of equipment you will definitely need will be a cup(if your a guy obviously) and a mouthpiece.  Some people will use wrestlers headgear, its not a requirement but it will keep you from getting whats called cauliflower ear.

As far as clothes go make sure you wear something comfortable but it can range from a rash guard to just an old t shirt.  A rash guard is basically a tight neoprene material that will help wick away sweat and trust me you will get sweaty.  For shorts I wouldn't recommend using just regular athletic or basketball shots the will get caught up and weigh you down, its a good idea to invest in some shorts designed for grappling they are worth the investment.

Personal Experience:

I started grappling as a way to stay in shape and meet new people.  I never realized I would love it so much. Its applications vary from just trying to lose a couple of pounds to practical uses like self defense.  I have never had to use it for that purpose and I hope I never have to.  I am really passive and laid back but that doesn't mean that I cant defend myself.  I let a lot of things slide but one thing I wont let go is if any one bothers my wife or threatens her in any way then the gloves are off and its time to defend yourself.
